Garhwal Forts

Garhwal Forts

>>Recently, a study has identified 193 sites having either intact or ruins of Garhwal forts and fortalices spread along the north, east and southern regions of the Garhwal Himalayas. This is the first of its kind database. A total of 36 major forts and 12 prominent fort clusters have been identified.

Garhwal Forts:

>>A majority of medieval forts in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand were strategically built to form clusters.

>>The forts, dating back to the 8th century Common Era (CE), were built at diverse altitude zones like valleys, along the ridges and prominent hilltops, some standing more than 3,000 metres above Mean Sea Level (MSL) in the Garhwal Himalayas.

>>These well networked forts were built either during or after the downfall of the Katyuri dynasty.

Importance:

>>Geographically, the forts were built away from one another. But the ruler's back then ensured that they were surrounded with smaller fortalices, which primarily functioned as watchtowers. These fortalices were erected and positioned around 15 km periphery of a major fort.

>>Numerous such fortalices then formed a strategic network, enabling them to relay information, particularly when invaded by enemies.

>>Fire, smoke or similar light signals could have been the common means to convey messages.

History of Garhwal:

Katyuri Dynasty:

>>History suggests that between 700 CE and 800 CE, the rulers of the Katyuri dynasty divided this region into many small mandals or units for administrative purposes.

>>However, as the dynasty began to politically weaken around the turn of the millennium, these units came under the rule of Garhpatis or chiefdoms, each of whom built individual forts.

Foreign Attacks:

>>Since the Garhwal Himalayas are located en route to many religious places, it often came under foreign attacks and faced enemy invasions, mainly led by the Nepalese and the Tibetans.

>>The invasion by Askochalla and Krachalla, two Nepalese kings during 1100–1200 CE, is considered among the first foreign attacks here.

>>By the 15th century, King Ajaypal, the 37th king of the Parmar dynasty, consolidated all these multiple chiefdoms in the region into a single state. This is the present day Garhwal.

The 1818 battle of Bhima-Koregaon

The 1818 battle of Bhima-Koregaon

The 1818 battle of Bhima-Koregaon, should be included in the history textbooks, said Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment.

Battle of Koregaon::

>>The Battle of Koregaon was fought on 1st January 1818 between the British East India Company and the Peshwa faction of the Maratha Confederacy, at Koregaon Bhima (present day Maharashtra)  It is also called the Battle of Koregaon Bhima, after the river Bhima that flows close to it.

>>The battle was part of the Third Anglo Maratha war - a series of battles that culminated in the defeat of the  Maratha Empire. It led to the subsequent rule of the British East India Company.

Significance of the Battle ::

>>The Mahars were considered as untouchable in the contemporary caste-based society.

>>The Peshwas, who were high-caste Brahmins, were notorious for their mistreatment and persecution of the untouchables.  This battle has thus attained legendary stature in Dalit history.

>>The Dalits who follow BR Ambedkar view this battle as a victory of Mahars over the injustice and torture meted  out to them by the Brahminical Peshwas.

Mahars and the Victory Pillar::

>>The Koregaon pillar inscription features the names of Company soldiers killed in the battle. 22 of these soldiers were Mahars.  The pillar was erected by the East India Company in memory of those who fought the  battle.  While the obelisk was built by the British as a symbol of their own power, today it serves as a memorial of the Mahars.  Ever since Bhima-Koregaon Ranstambh Seva Sangh (BKRSS) was formed, they regard the stambh or pillar as a site of their velour and a symbol of their place in the political diaspora.  B. R. Ambedkar visited the site on 1st January 1927. To commemorate his visit to the site,  today thousands of his followers visit the site.

Economic Idea Of Mahatma Gandhi

Economic Idea Of Mahatma Gandhi

Today 2nd October celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. Lets see the Economic ideas of gandhi and are they still relevant ?

Economic Laws : It should be formulated according to the laws of nature. There is no conflict between the laws of nature and laws of economics.

Non Violent Economy : As there was no industry and no activity without certain violence, he wanted to minimize it. Gandhiji opposed capitalism as it resulted in exploitation of human labour.

Decentralisation : Gandhi was not in favour of large scale industrialisation, as it was responsible for many socio- economic evils. Gandhiji was for the development of cottage and rural industries.

Khadi industry : Gandhiji believed that khadi industry would save millions of people from starvation and would supplement the earnings of poor people.

Village Sarvodaya : Gandhiji wanted the revival of ancient village communities. Production was simultaneous with consumption and distribution and the vicious circle of money economy was absent.

The Trusteeship : The inherited wealth belonged to the entire society and must be spent on the welfare of all.

Labour Welfare : He always pleaded for shorter hours of work and more leisure so that workers might not be reduced to the condition of beasts. Capital should be labour's servant, not its master.

Simplicity : Happiness lay in the curtailment of wants and not in their multiplication. he firmly believed that western materialism and industrialisation had increased human wants.

Swadeshi : Gandhi envisaged villages as self sufficient republics. According to him, the village economy would satisfy two important objectives. First, it would provide maximum employment and income to inhabitants, and second it would generate equality, freedom and justice.

Gainful Employment : His advocacy of the charkha was a way to promote gainful employment for an able bodied individual. The charkha symbolised this view about how each person could earn their own livelihood and become self reliant. He was a prominent advocate of dignity of labour.

Well being of Poor : "Recall the face of the poorest and weakest man you have seen, and ask yourself if thid dtep you contemplate is going to be any use to him" He believed that nobodu would be left wanting if everyone used just as much as was needed by him.

Appropriate technology : In 1946, Gandhi wrote, " I am not opposed to machinery as such. I am opposed to machinery which displace labour and leaves it idle". Mechanisation was good till it did not render people idle and unemployed.

What is Adrian Helmet ?

What is Adrian Helmet ?

  • During world war 1, the first combat helmet was issues to the french army. Called the Adrian helmet, and introduced in 1915, it is often described as the first modern steel helmet.
  • It was designed to protect french troops in trenches from head wounds from falling shrapnel.
  • Now new research found it performs better then modern military helmets in protecting the head from shock waves created by over head blast.
  • In protection from ballistics and blunt impacts, modern military helmets have advanced, but in terms of protecting brain from shock waves from nearby blast, the modern helmets are no better than WWI helmets, biomedical engineers of Duke university have found.
  • And the Adrian helmet , in particular, actually performed better then modern designs in protecting from overhead blasts, the researchers reported last week in the journal PLOS ONE.
