State of India's Birds 2020 Report.
- The report was released on 17th feb 2020 at the 13th COP to the convention on migratory species, held at gandhinagar, Gujarat, India.
- This is the first comprehensive assessment of the distribution range, trends in abundance and conservation status, for most of the bird species that regularly occur in india.
- It is not a government report, but a consortium of both government and non government organisation.
- 867 species of indian birds assessed in this report.
Why is Bird survey relevant ?
- With their ubiquity and ecological importance, birds are excellent indicators of the state of our natural world and are potent cultural symbol of nature.
- Birds play vital role in the health of ecosystems through their actions as polinators, seed dispersers, predators, scavengers and as prey for other species.
- This national level assessment of birds is a significant step forward in the monitoring and conservation of india's rich and varied bio diversity.
This assessment is based on three indices. Two are indices of change in abundance.
1) Long term trend (over 25 year)
2) Current annual trend ( over the past 5 year)
3) Distribution range size.
This report places indian species into low, moderate and high categories of conservation concern for india.
Reasons behind the Avian decline.
1) Urbanisation is the biggest culprit.
2) Hunting.
3) Habitat loss.
4) Collision with electricity line.
