India Meteorological Department (IMD)


Formed : 1875
Ministry : Ministry of Earth Science
Responsible : Meteorological observation, Weather forecasting, Seismology
Head Quarter : New Delhi.
Regional Office : Mumbai, Kolkata, Nagpur, Pune.


➠IMD is also one of the six Regional specialised meteorological centers of the World Meteorological organisation.
➠It has the responsibility for forecasting, naming and distribution of warnings for tropical cyclones in the northern india ocean regions, including the Malacca straits, the bay of bengal, the arabian sea, and the persian gulf.
➠The first meteorological observatories were established in india by the British East India company. These included Calcutta observatory 1785, The madras observatory 1796, The Colba observatory 1826.
➠The Asiatic society, founding in Calcutta 1784 and in bombay 1804, promted the study of meteorology in india.
➠Henry Francis Blanford was the first meteorological reporter of the IMD.
