What is FastTag ?
FastTag is an electronic toll collection system, operated by the NHAI. Based on radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, FastTag is affixed on the widescreen of vehicles. In other words, FatTags are prepaid rechargeable tags for toll collection. FastTags do not have any expiry date, hence, they can be used as long as they are not tampered with and are readable at the toll plazas.
How dose FastTag system work ?
- Vehicles which have fastTag enabled on them, do not have to stop at toll gates as charges are deducted from the prepaid or bank account when the vehicle is moving. This means that drivers do not have to stop their vehicle to make transactions as the toll collection will be done electronically under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme.
Is FastTag Mandatory ?
- Yes, from december 1, 2019 Fasttag will be mandatory. If FastTag is missing from a vehicle, the driver will have to pay double the toll tax.
How to Buy a FastTag ?
- FastTags are issued by 22 certified banks and through various channels at national Highway toll plazas and also available on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and flipkart.

- Axis bank, ICICI bank, IDFC bank, SBI, HDFC bank, Karur vysya bank, Equitas small finance bank, kotak mahindra bank, Syndicate bank, federal bank, South indian bank, Punjab national bank, Punjab & Maharashtra co-op bank, Sarawat bank, City union bank, Nagpur nagrik sahakari bank ltd.
Which payment bank issue FastTag?
PayTm and Fino payment bank.
How to recharge FastTags ?
- In case you have linked the FastTag to NHAI prepaid wallet, then it can be recharged through cheque or through UPI/Debit card/Credit card/NEFT/Net banking etc.
Can we use FastTag with two or more vehicles?
No. You have to buy two seperate FastTags for two vehicles.
When were FastTag introduced ?
- In 2014, FastTag were setup as a key project in the Golden Quadrilateral between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. On October 19,2019 FastTag was made mandatory on all National Highways.
